Advocating for LGBTQ+ Equality Since 1973

Founded in 1973 after the simple act of a mother publicly supporting her gay son, PFLAG is the first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies.

PFLAG has over 400 chapters which make up the PFLAG Chapter Network, and nearly 250,000 members and supporters crossing multiple generations of families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas across America

This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced, and serviced by the staff of PFLAG National, the National Board of Directors, and the all-volunteer Regional Directors Council.

CFH is a collaboration between PFLAG National and designer Kevin Halfhill, created to inspire change through Love, Charity, Compassion, and Belonging—values that are vital to humanity.

PFLAG National provides support to LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families, and allies. This includes critical peer-to-peer support, both in person (when safe to do so) and online via our PFLAG Connects online meeting platform.

PFLAG National provides critical education on issues of importance to LGBTQ+ people, their families, and allies. Our educational tools include engaging publications, Cultivating Respect (our safe-schools program), a variety of live broadcast discussion series, and online learning sessions via PFLAG Academy Online.

PFLAG National engages in critical advocacy work to enact positive local, state, and federal legislation—and block damaging legislation. That work includes direct lobbying, coalition actions, and submitting amicus (friend-of-the-court) briefs to state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

PFLAG National is committed to creating a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Simply put: PFLAG is an organization where all families belong.

Help us change hearts, minds, and laws

Advocacy is one of the three pillars of PFLAG’s work, with members and supporters working to change legislation and—equally as important—hearts and minds. Laws are crucial, but just as crucial is societal support of legislation that protect LGBTQ+ people from harassment, discrimination, violence, and harm.

Whether you are a person who is, or loves someone who is, LGBTQ+, sharing your personal story can make a critical difference!

PFLAG is working to make sure that all people who are LGBTQ+ are not only valued by society, but take pride in and value themselves. We start with creating affirming parents and families.

Family support and affirmation is critical to the health and well-being of people who are LGBTQ+…and PFLAG has been at the forefront of this work for over four decades. People who are LGBTQ+ and their families deserve to be safe and secure, no matter where they live, work, study, pray, or play. Through our three pillars of support, education, and advocacy, PFLAG works to make sure that all communities provide this type of security, and have the resources needed to help those communities thrive.

PFLAG is working to create a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Big Change Begins with Small Acts of Love

PFLAG believes that lives are transformed by unconditional love—and that celebrating our diversity makes us powerful. To ensure that PFLAG is a place where all families belong, we are, deeply committed to listening, learning, and meeting people where they are, acknowledging and embracing their journeys and their stories.
